December 27, 2009

Folks - This Sunday will be my final one leading worship at Peace. I'll play at the Wednesday Evening service and New Years Day service, but this is my final Sunday with the whole congregation. I ask for your prayers; it will no doubt be an emotional day. As was the case for last year, the music for the final Sunday will be some of the theme songs we've used over the course of the year. These are some of my favorites. I'd do "Jesus, You Make All Things New!" again but, alas, it was from 2008. It has been a great pleasure and joy to worship Christ with you and to grow in the skills of musicianship. I will miss you. - E.T.

Some of you may even be frustrated/upset over my absence. I'm not going to give reasons, try and make excuses, or any of that; I want to simply say i'm sorry. I hope that those of you who did go can share your experiences with me. I want to hear about the things you learned, the ways you were encouraged, challenged, etc.

P.P.S. - I appreciate everyone trying doubly hard to get to church on time for rehearsals Thursday night and Sunday before worship. Please remember that we want to begin rehearsing at 6:30 (and 10:30 on Sundays). Please arrive before-hand so that you are able to set-up, plug-in, tune, and do whatever else is necessary to be ready when the time comes. If the adult bible study is still in session when you arrive on Sunday, feel free to go ahead and enter the Sanctuary to set-up, but please be quiet and respectful of their fellowship, especially when they are in prayer.

In last week's post I mentioned the formation of a "Worship Music Advisory Team" (complicated name, simple task). That team has been formed and will meet on Thursday, November 26th. The team will meet on the Thursday before a fifth Sunday. There will be no regular worship team rehearsal in light of the 5th Sunday being led by the Youth Worship Team. As there are so many who are interested in serving on this team, the members may rotate as there are only so many meetings a year. The members for this go-around are myself, Tom, Missy, Wendie, and a congregational member yet to be determined. Here's how you can support this team:

- Pray for us as we begin to prepare for our meeting in November.
- Make suggestions to any member regarding songs you think we should add (or subtract) from our repetoire.
- Provide actual music (recordings or lead sheets/music) for the team to review when they meet.

The function of this team is to review the active repetoire of the Worship Team and add or subtract music as is appropriate. In addition, we will learn new music (or re-learn old tunes) together and thereby further diversify our "arsenal" of worship songs for Sunday. If you have any questions about this team, please contact me.

- - - - - - - - -

This Friday is the early bird deadline for the CMS conference at Overlake in November. You can find out more information here: http://www.christianmusiciansummit.com/templates/cuscms/details.asp?id=32393&PID=428374

This will be a tremendous opportunity for growth and one you will not want to miss. If you'd like to go please notify me ASAP. Payement for early bird registration will be due no later than rehearsal on Thursday. If 5 or more of us sign up before Friday it will cost $114.00 per person. Click on the "REGISTER" link on the website to see the price chart. I hope many/most of you will be able to make it. I am personally thrilled to see my main man, Doyle Dykes!

See you Thursday! - E.T.

My apologies - I forgot that the Adult Choir will be singing this Sunday. Their anthem will take the place of the Gathering Song. I've made the appropriate change below. Thanks for being flexible.

In an effort to diversify our musical repertoire I am proposing that we form a "Worship Music Advisory Team". This Team, formed out of members of the worship team and congregation, will work with me (I like that part) in selecting music for future use in our worship at Peace. Beyond simply choosing the music, they'll also learn it together and help in teaching it to other members of the Worship Team. This will also help to bring back some of the older songs that I am not familiar with but have been used in the past. I foresee the team meeting once every three to four months to go over new music (heard on the radio, new albums, etc.) and make recommendations in what music we can add and/or remove from our active repertoire. If you'd like to serve on this team, please let me know. - E.T.

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

They'll go back to leading worship (on Sunday morning) on Youth Sundays (fifth Sundays). I'll have revised versions of the September and October Worship Team calendars this Thursday at rehearsal. You can also get them out of my mailbox at church anytime. See you soon -E.T.

As we get into September and I look into the coming months it'd be helpful to know if there are weekends any of you will be out of town and unable to play. I want to make sure you all have a chance to get "on the stage" at least once a month; it's quite difficult with so many of you with a heart to offer your worship to God in this special way. Knowing your schedules ahead of time will help me greatly. Thanks.

As soon as we're done with music for this coming Sunday we'll move on to the parade music. We'll only prepare about 20 minutes of music as the parade route is very very short, indeed. If you can't make the parade rehearsal but still want to sing with the group on Saturday, show up at the Safeway parking lot (it has been changed from Kohl's) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday! NOTE: Meet at the SAFEWAY Parking Lot @ 9 on Saturday!

If you have any questions feel free to e-mail. See you all very soon - E.T.

I've put together a calendar for the next two months (July and August) which have all of the ensembles "locked" into place for the next 9 weeks. While these calendars forecast who's playing in the weeks to come, you must check the blog to make sure you know when you're expected to sing/play/etc. The "FULL" ensemble is not a "set" ensemble, but a group of players pulled from the general "pool" of musicians in the worship team. In other words, "FULL" can mean anyone. This also opens up opportunities for us to try more unique combinations of instruments/voices that we've not tried before. Another reason to check the blog often. The "roster" for the upcoming "FULL" ensemble will be posted two weeks in advance. If you have any questions about this procedure please feel free to e-mail me. We're just trying it out for now and will re-evaluate it come the end of August. If it works well then we'll continue into the fall at which point we'll forecast the entire school year. That should help to overcome some of the scheduling difficulties we've encountered. I hope this is helpful to you.

- - - - - - - -

The Worship Team has been asked to play music on the church's float for the Covington Days Parade. This is no small deal. The Parade is on July 18th. If you'd like to play in the Parade I need you to e-mail me ASAP and let me know. (I'll include this info in the e-mail coming out this afternoon.) We won't have space on the trailer for everyone, but we'll need enough people to commit to make it worthwhile. We'll also be limited by the amount of power we can draw from the generator. I imagine we'll be able to support 1 Keyboard (w/ amp), a few singers (not sure how much draw 3 or more mics would create - could have many singers sharing mics, of course), and 3 Guitars (w/amps) with the power available. The drums won't take any power, obviously. We'll prepare a 30-minute set; all very familiar and singer-friendly stuff. We'll rehearse that music after rehearsal on the 16th. If you'd like to sing/play in the Parade you must be at that rehearsal. Any questions? I'll send out more info about that as the date approaches. Ok...wow...a lot there. Please watch your inboxes for an e-mail later today.

See you Thursday @ 6:30! - E.T.

I've put together a calendar for the next two months (July and August) which have all of the ensembles "locked" into place for the next 9 weeks. I'll be e-mailing out the calendars (which are presently in Publisher format) this afternoon. You can also pick them up at the church; i've left several copies in my box in the Mail Room. While these calendars forecast who's playing in the weeks to come, you must check the blog to make sure you know when you're expected to sing/play/etc. The "FULL" ensemble is not a "set" ensemble, but a group of players pulled from the general "pool" of musicians in the worship team. Another reason to check the blog often. The "roster" for the upcoming "FULL" ensemble will be posted two weeks in advance. For example; "FULL" is playing on July 19th, thus, I will post the line-up at the end of this e-mail.

I do encourage you all to make time to attend the worship services Thursday and Friday evening; they will be awesome!

See you tomorrow night - E.T.

P.S. - If I didn't place you in either of the services for Easter it's because 1) I forgot...sorry! or 2) you didn't respond to me. Please let me know if there's been an error.

Folk - Palm Sunday is going to be a little different this year. Take a look at the order of worship below and let me know if you have any questions. "King of Kings" is new to the congregation but by no means a new song. Only two chords in it; i'm sure we'll be fine. See you Thursday @ 6:30!

Distribution Songs:
- "Wash My Feet" (D) (Eric)
- "Breathe" (G)
- "All Who Are Thirsty" (D)
- "Create In Me A Clean Heart" (G)

6. Thursday Evening, Gethsemane. Jesus is betrayed. Mark 14:32-50

7. Thursday Night, High Priest’s house. Jesus is rejected. Mark 14:53-65

8. Thursday Night, High Priest’s house. Jesus is disowned. Mark 14:66-72

10. Friday, Golgotha. Jesus is crucified and buried. Mark 16:1-6

Note that i'll play "Wash My Feet" while you guys receive Communion. There won't be any of the normal "liturgical" pieces to worry about this time around. The service will pretty much be as it's printed here. If you looked on the blog earlier today (before Noon) and saw something for Palm Sunday posted then, please disregard that posting. This is the revised and final version. Thanks!

P.S. - Take a break and enjoy the Telecaster Master (playing a Strat here) enjoying a solo or two with Dobro legend Jerry Douglas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7z9JGMN2Cw

E.T.'s Lenten Film Review

Hey - For the 40-Days of Lent I’ll be reviewing motion pictures and posting reviews online. I’ll be making critical reviews (based on directions, editing, scoring, etc.) and be looking at the film through the “lens” of Scripture. For each movie I’ll determine a “Reel Revelation”; a Biblical concept we can see in action that can encourage us to live out more faithfully the life Christ has given. Come on by! The address is: http://etsreview.blogspot.com/ - E.T.

A Righteous Prayer

This is a day of history, but we ought not dismiss the history of our faith which declares one unmoveable truth: Jesus is the Man, the Son of God, the Way of Salvation, and there is no other. We submit to the kings of this world but trust in God alone.

This prayer is an adaptation of the prayer composed by Archbishop John Carroll, the first Archbishop in the United States, for the inauguration of George Washington in 1789.

Almighty and eternal God,you have revealed your glory to all nations.God of power and might, wisdom and justice, through you authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment is decreed.

Assist with your spirit of counsel and fortitude
Barack Obama, the President of these United States,
that his administration may be conducted in righteousness,
and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides.
May he encourage due respect for virtue and religion.
May he execute the laws with justice and mercy.
May he seek to restrain crime, vice, and immorality.
Let the light of your divine wisdom
direct the deliberations of Congress,
and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed
for our rule and government.
May they seek to preserve peace, promote national happiness,
and continue to bring us the blessings of liberty and equality.
We pray for Christine Gregoire, the governor of this state,
for the members of the legislature,
for judges, elected civil officials,
and all others who are entrusted to guard our political welfare.

May they be enabled, by your powerful protection,
to discharge their duties with honesty and ability.
We likewise commend to your unbounded mercyall citizens of the United States,
that we be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of your holy law.
May we be preserved in union and that peace which the world cannot give;and,
after enjoying the blessings of this life,
be admitted to those which are eternal.

We pray to you, who are Lord and God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Homily Worth Reading

Folk - The following is a homily written by Fr. Ryan, head priest of St. James Cathedral in Seattle. He preached this homily on Corpus Christi Sunday of 2008. I keep a copy of this in my mailbox at church and read it often. Fr. Ryan is truly a shepherd to the people of St. James and Seattle at large. Enjoy.

I’ve often thought we should have a contest to see who could come up with the exact number of crosses and crucifixes in the Cathedral. I’ve never done the count but I know this much: there are a lot of them. They are everywhere! And among them are some very special ones. Did you know, for instance, that the cross we use as the processional cross during Advent and Lent – the one with the blackened figure of Jesus on it – is a survivor of the Cathedral’s arson fire of 1992? At the time of the fire, it was hanging over the vesting table in the sacristy. Nearly everything else in the sacristy was destroyed by that fire, but not the corpus on that cross. It merely turned coal black. Kind of a resurrection story. It’s in the chapel this morning in case you’d like to see it.
And then there’s the glass cross that hangs in the chapel during the Easter season, although it, too, is in the chapel today. The glass cross is another resurrection story. It is made of shards of glass rescued from the sacristy’s old stained-glass windows, all of which exploded outward during that same fire of 1992. The morning after the fire, a Holy Names Sister on our staff, Margaret Evenson, was on her hands and knees in the dirt outside those windows, painstakingly salvaging every piece of glass she could find. Later, an artist assembled those random shards into a stunningly beautiful crucifix.
Then there’s the great processional crucifix over there that leads the procession on many of the great feasts of the Church, including today’s. That crucifix sat on the Cathedral’s old high altar for 45 years when the altar was at the far east end. Now it’s in our midst and approachable, and I, for one, am always deeply moved when I see it coming down the aisle, raised high above our heads, leading the way, lighting the way, reminiscent of the column of cloud and the pillar of fire that guided the chosen people on their way through the Red Sea to freedom.
The cross is as it should be at St. James Cathedral: prominent and clearly triumphant -- the paradoxical cross that is both instrument of torture and trophy of victory. Of course, it is not the cross itself that is triumphant: it is Jesus Christ who is triumphant, and his triumph, his victory, is unlike any other. His victory came about not as victories usually do – by force meeting force, power striking back at power. No, his victory came about precisely when he refused the use of power – when he allowed himself no defense whatever, becoming completely vulnerable, the plaything of evil, “sin itself” to use St. Paul’s words. Like Isaiah’s Suffering Servant, he was a lamb led to the slaughter, a sheep before the shearers, silent, opening not his mouth. Or to use the words of an ancient Christian hymn in today’s reading from Philippians, “He emptied himself, taking on the form of a slave.”
One of the Eucharistic Prayers says this in yet another way: “For our sake he opened his arms on the cross.” No one opened those arms for him, he opened them of his own accord in an act of perfect freedom – as if to say: here, and only here is the power that can overcome evil. Not hatred, not force, not violence of any sort, but love freely given! And so, my friends, the triumph of the cross is really the triumph of non-violence, the triumph of vulnerability, the triumph of love.
How, then, are we to explain our history – our bloody and often vengeful history – we who claim to be followers of Christ and who call his cross triumphant? How indeed? Even a cursory reading of two-thousand years of Christian history is a sorry tale of blood shed in causes both noble and disgraceful, a tale that, no matter how we tell it, too often bears little or no resemblance to the story of Jesus.
The story of Jesus is the strongest possible argument in favor of non-violence. In fact, a good case can be made to read his story and the entire Christian gospel as a call to do as the earliest Christians did: to renounce the use of force, not to defend it. I know that sounds simplistic, especially in the world in which we live, and I’m not proposing it as a political philosophy or a blueprint for statecraft. I know very well that from the time of St. Augustine in the fourth century, the Church has developed sophisticated arguments to justify the use of force and killing under certain conditions, but I also believe that every argument that we make to justify the use of force must take into account the fact that at the very heart of our faith is the One who could have fought back but didn’t, could have called up legions of angels but didn’t, the one who walked the road to Calvary, opened his arms on the cross, and spoke words of forgiveness for his tormentors and executioners.
Whatever we believe about the violent use of force – about wars, just or unjust, provoked or preemptive or, for that matter, about the state-sponsored killing that is capital punishment, we Christians must do our thinking and form our consciences with one image squarely in our line of sight: the image of the cross – the cruel instrument of torture and death made holy and triumphant by the One who could have struck back but didn’t.
Today, we look at our world (pick your place!) and we see appalling violence, vengeance, and endless retribution, and we find ourselves asking, “Where does it all end?” And, of course, the answer is that it doesn’t end, and it never will end – not as long as violence continues to be met by violence. As Christians, the cross is our answer, the triumphant cross of Jesus Christ! Or, better, Jesus Christ is our answer – Jesus whose death, while it looks like total defeat, is really the path to life and peace, the only path to life and peace!
